Clindamycin Hydrochloride
-
Description
Clindamycin is an antibiotic used in cats and dogs that contains the active ingredient clindamycin hydrochloride. It’s suitable for treating certain bacterial infections, including abscesses, bite wounds, dental infections, certain skin infections, and, in some cases, toxoplasmosis.
Clindamycin works by preventing bacteria from producing essential proteins they need to grow and multiply. The medication binds to ribosomes, a part of bacterial cells, and therefore slows or stops bacterial growth.
Clindamycin is often most effective against certain gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria. However, it’s ineffective against viral illnesses such as feline herpesvirus or canine parvovirus.
Directions
Clindamycin is available as an oral liquid, capsules, tablets, and chewable tablets. For capsules and tablets, 25 mg, 75 mg, and 150 mg are common strengths. The oral liquid often comes in a 25 mg/ mL strength. Your pet’s dose may vary and depends on the following:
- Their body weight
- Infection type
- Infection severity
- Product formulation
It’s typically given by mouth, every 12-24 hours. Treatment length may range from a few days to several weeks. Clindamycin should always be followed with food or water. Always administer the full course of the medication, even if your pet’s symptoms improve earlier and use exactly as directed or specified on the label.Ingredients

Contraindications

Cautions
There are several points you should be aware of before starting your cat or dog on this medication:
- If your dog or cat has liver or kidney disease, extra caution may be needed. This applies especially when doses are high or treatment terms are longer. Your veterinarian may monitor your pet’s bloodwork, liver and kidney function.
- Muscle and nerve signaling can be affected by clindamycin. If your pet needs anesthesia during treatment, your veterinarian will use extra caution.
- Clindamycin may increase the effects of neuromuscular-blocking medications. If taking both simultaneously cannot be avoided, caution is needed.
- Administer clindamycin with food, water, or a moist treat and do not give it dry. This reduces the risk of esophagus irritation.
- If you have concerns before or during treatment, reach out to a veterinarian. They can help you clarify any questions regarding proper use, side effects, dosing, and more.
Side Effects
Relatively common side effects of clindamycin include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drooling, and lip-smacking. While the former side effects are often relatively mild, more serious ones include trouble swallowing, pain or irritation in the throat or esophagus, esophagitis, esophageal ulceration, esophageal narrowing, and allergic reactions.
Your pet may experience additional side effects not listed here. Notify your veterinarian if you notice any persistent or concerning side effects from clindamycin in your pet.
